Insects are not essential to grow a sunflower. The seed will grow and produce seeds in almost any conditions. Sunflowers do not need to be pollinated to produce seeds.

Do you mean for the flower to produce seeds? If so, yes. They also like some Boron in the planting hole and lots of sun.
