it's not harmful.
If it was harmful, the highway would be swamped with broken down vehicles.

an automatic transmission is designed to, as stated shift automatically, as the car progesses through certian speeds. you have first, secound, and third in most A.T', so then as an example, lets say the car progresses into third from secound, this can happen usually between 30 to 40 M.P.H depending on the make and modle of the car your driving. As the car hits this speed the tranny shifts up, but if this speed isn't maintained the tranny will compensate and sift down. Its not a good thing to have the tranny shifting up then down over, and over because the speed wasn't constent its unneeded stress and wear and you do want to get the most use out of that thing as possible. Just drive it like your suppose to and rember to keep fliud in it, and another thing, about fluid, tranny or oil, don't over fill it that will cause seals to blow out and leak. A little less on the indicator is best.I hope this answered your question up and down.

I sure hope not! Traditional automatics have one or another sort of mechanical kickdown linkage attached to the throttle to force downshifts when you mat the pedal, and if it's adjusted pretty tight like I do with mine, it can sometimes be necessary to get off the gas entirely to encourage a comparatively early upshift. From what I can tell, most if not all newer automatics have a shift control system that's managed by the engine computer ... but the same idea probably still applies.

its not necessary. i dont know if its bad for the car, but it could be dangerous to the rear end of it!
the automatic transmission is designed to shift evenly, so letting off the gas is not going to affect it.

Nope. Nothing to worry about. The "system" compensates for whatever you do. That's why it's called an automatic ;)

not at all. the engine is still running and the transmission does not come to a stop just because you let off the petal.. it just disengages.
cars are cool.
