I would try a combination of vinegar and baking soda make a paste and rub with cleaning towel with the baking soda vinegar on the towel. I usually use apple cider vinegar. I do this to my own bathroom fixtures, to get water spots off the chrome and I would think it would be safe to use on the gold plated taps.

Are your taps actually gold plated, or do they just look like gold? I have "gold and silver" taps in my master bath (it came that way when I bought the house), but I actually have neither gold nor silver in my bathroom. All purpose cleaner works just fine, because my "gold" is copper and my "silver" is nickle. The whole thing is coated.
If you actually have gold plating, I'd recommend jewelry cleaner and an excellent alarm system.

Get the maid to do it and shoot her if she gets it wrong. Now seriously-gold plated taps?Well if you really want to know, gold anything should be washed with washing up liquid and a very soft old toothbrush. It works great on engagement rings.
