Other than Toni Morrison. Are we being totally left behind in this genre or am I missing something?

Well, I don't know of anybody in North America, but the BEST one in this genere is the Colombian (South American) genious Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

I love Alice Hoffman.
I am a children's librarian and more of a kid's book person, and I will say that many N. American children's authors succeed with magical realism. Louis Sacher, Richard Peck's Voices After Midnight, Sharon Creech's Pleasing the Ghost. Brain block right now.
It does seem like it was originally a Latin American thing, now more of a British thing.

not that I know of, there's a bunch of translations on the works of Garcia Marquez, Allende, Asturias, Carpentier, etc, but I can't think of anyone in America who writes in that stream
