Honest to God this works, because I had the same problem. Put a pencil and notepad on your nightstand and when you think of something you need to do, or just a passing thought, write it down. You'll quit worrying about things, especially if you think you are going to forget, because now you have written it down to review in the morning! I don't know why, but it worked for me.
Good Luck!

I often have the same problem. What I have found to work well is to use relaxation techniques. I lie on my back, and tense up my entire body. Starting with my toes, I imagine a relaxing green or white light that slowly rises up my body, and everywhere that it moves relaxes my muscles, from toes, to calves, etc.
If I am still awake after that, I get into a comfy position, then I imagine I am on an escalator going down. It is very light at the top and as I go down to the count of say 15, (take a deep, slow, relaxing breath with each floor down, and picture that # in your mind) counting backwards, I imagine it getting darker and darker with every floor or # i pass.
Usually, I am asleep before I finish. But, if not yet, I just talk to God and tell him that I am going to blank my mind, and turn it over to him, then I just lay passive and watch whatever floats across my minds eye.
Hope this helps you. Let me know if you try it. Give it a few nights of practice, and it will be easier and easier.

I'm 37 and I'm the same way!! My mind just has a really hard time shutting down at night. This is what helps me - be sure to get some exercise in at some point during the day, avoid caffeine and excess sugar after 5:00 pm, and get a sound effects maker or CD. I have found that the sound of water - waves, rippling brok, rain (no music. Just the sounds) - really relaxes me and makes me drift off the sleep more easily.

I've had this same problem for years. Now I drink a few beers in the evening and that helps me relax but you can't really do that and you pro ably don't want to take pills though if you do, Benadryl is the one because it just makes you a little sleepy and it's non-habit forming.
Really what worked best for me was laying really still and concentrating on nothing but deep breathing, in through the nose and out through the mouth like they do in yoga. Also stretch all your muscles before you get into bed like you would before exercising. It helps relieve the days physical tension and can be a way to clear your mind.

Create a routine. You have to go to sleep and wake up the same time every day. Try taking a warm relaxing bath before bed with something infused with the scent of Lavander to help calm you. Turn out all the lights in your room and close your eyes in the complete darkness. This is a trick that works on adults as well as infants, it's called the tickle-scratch. On the inside of your foreman, lightly graze your nails in and up and down slow motion. It will put you right to sleep.

That's good, the idea about jotting things down so you don't have to think about them anymore.
I find it easiest to relax after a good stretch and wiggling my toes.
Another good idea -- a basic meditation technique -- is to count your breaths. Just breathe normally. Thoughts always butt into your consciousness and take over; when that happens, you just start again at zero.
Zzzzz....

I use over the counter allergy medicine. It works like a charm and you will not wake up and have a dragging feeling the next day.
