You've just been in a car accident and your vehicle needs to be towed. One of the first things that might come to your mind is, "How much is this going to cost?"

You call three different towing companies and get 3 different rates:

Allied Auto Towing charges: $45 hook up within a 2-mile radius, and $2 per mile for any towing over 2 miles.
Hank's Towing charges: $40 hook up within a 3-mile radius, and $3 per mile for any towing over 3 miles.
Speedy Towing Service Inc. charges a flat towing rate of $75.00, but will not tow anything over 20 miles.

Your car needs to be towed 17 miles to your uncle's store where he say's he'll fix it for free if you can get it there.
How much will it cost you using Allied? How much will it cost you using Sal's? How much will it cost you using Speedy?
Which company is your best bet? Why?

Please help me with this question!!

1.) Write a function for each of the three towing companies, making sure each one is labeled.
*** Remember that the first couple of miles are included with the first two companies, so you need to include that in your function. Think about it before you write.***
2.) Write out a cost for f(17) for each towing company.
3.) Explain which company is your best bet and why.

This is simple math. YOU do your homework, I've already graduated, and you need the practice. Truly, this is not a hard problem at all.

For Allied the function would be set H as the hook up charge and M as the mile variable so it would look like this:

Allied - Cost = H + 2(m-2) or Hook up + 2(miles - 2)
so we have $45 + $2(17 miles - 2)
which would be $45 + $2(15) or $45 + $30 = $75.00

Hanks's - Cost = H + 3(m-3) or $40 + 3(17miles - 3)
which would be $40 + $3(14 miles) or $40 + $42 = $82.00

Speedy is a flat rate of $75.

It is a matter of opinion as to which is best as Speedy and Allied have the same total price.

here are the three equations for the different towing companies

Allied towing

C=45+2(x-2) this is a 45 dollar hookup and 2 dollar per mile for
anything X-2 miles
=41+2x with a minimum of 45

Hank's towing

C=40+3(x-3)
=31+3x with a minimum of 40

Speedy towing
C=75 dollars

now for the 17 miles

Allied would cost 75 dollars
Hanks would cost 82 dollars
Speedy would cost 75 dollars

so either Allied or Speedy would be your best buy. But I would pick Allied incase your uncles house is actually farther than the 17 miles then they would still bring it the entire distance whereas Speedy may not want to (imagine that the road between you and your uncles place was closed for some reason making it such that the distance to travel was more than 20 miles then you would be out of luck with Speedy's service)

Allied: 45+2(x-2) f(17)=$75
Hanks: 40+3(x-3) f(17)=$82
Speedy: y=75 x<20 = $75

Both Allied and Speedy will be the same price.

Allied: 45 + 2(17-2) = x; x = 75.00
Hank's: 40 + 3(17-3) = x; x= 82.00
Speedy: 75.00 = x (can't really think of any equation which would work here).

Does it matter how far away the towing places are from where you are?
