I've got a desktop PC I use for gaming, and a PC laptop for work. The Mac is robust, reliable, intuitive, sleek, well designed, good looking.
However, you would get more bangs for you buck from a PC. You could get a desktop PC and shove extra RAM, get a massive HDD, and even a decent 3D Graphics card with TV out for not much money, where the same would buy would a Mac laptop without so much juice, on paper.
Macs have design applications as part of their heritage, and handle graphics and multitasking in a different way from PC, so pure numbers don't cover it.
The Dell website would be a good place to go for a look at baseline PC specs, and you can see some prices, and make a decision based on your spending power.
Personally, I'd go for a Mac laptop, depending on how much you have to spend. My is a low spec G4 with only a 12in screen, so a Powerbook with a bigger screen and more RAM would be the business

New Macs are using intel peocessors and are basically identical to PCs on the hardware side. The only difference is the software ... and the design and price of course. PCs are cheaper.
Also it's possible to install Mac OS X on a normal PC. There is a website with turorials.

This all depends on what you are looking for in a computer.
A PC, usually meaning a computer that runs the Microsoft Windows brand of operating system and made by a large number of manufacturers are the majority of computers seen in businesses and households around the world. PCs run on a number of different processors, including those manufactured by AMD and Intel. Some positive aspects of PCs include:
**Wide acceptability worldwide
**Wide availability of programs, servers, accessories by millions of companies worldwide
**Most common format in networking
Problems may include the following
**Large number of users=larger number of virus makers/viruses/crap programs
**DLL coding
**Microsoft supports only it's software and not the computer hardware
**The new version of Windows, "Vista", contains elements blatently and honestly copied from Mac OSX
A Mac is a computer manufactured solely by Apple Computer. Macs run on an independent operating system (seperate from Windows) called Mac OSX. These computers have recently been white in color or available in an assortment of weird colors. Powered previously by IBM PowerPC processors, Apple computer has recently converted it's computer line to processors by Intel. Some reasons why people argue that Macs are better computers than PCs include:
**Same company manufactures computer and maintains the operating system
**Fewer viruses as only 5-8% of people use Mac OSX
**Traditionally stronger programs for architectural designers, photographers, musicians, etc.
**Newer Macs include Intel processors and can run both Mac OSX and Windows operating systems using a program known as "Boot Camp"
**Apple traditionally has a very strong customer support
**Some consider Macs to be more visually appealing
Some problems include:
**Availabiilty of programs (notably gaming without Windows)
**Apple exclusivity of software (I.E. iPhoto cannot be run in Windows)
**Typically more expensive intially and to maintain
**Traditionally harder to upgrade
Personally, I have an PowerPC iBook G4 Laptop and a Windows XP PC Desktop. So the decision really lies in what you are looking for. All I can suggest is that you at least try both out before you buy anything.

its hard to determine which one is the better of the two. If you are doing graphic and video editing, then you are better off with a Mac but if its more documents, presentations and databases, then go with a PC

Linux's answer hit the spot. Although I wouldn't say the gaming is "Limited" all the big name games that you would want to play are going to be compatible with the MAC System :)
Mac's are great.

Mac running OS X - easy to use, secure, virus free, spyware free, great for design and video work. Limited games.
PC running Windows - Good for games. Thousands of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware. Crashes a lot. Very expensive.
PC running Linux - fast, secure, stable = good server. Great hardware support. Wide range of free software. Bad for gaming.

That is like asking "Which is better, a Ford or a Chevrolet"? Both brands will get you where you want to go. Both brands have people who love their vehicle and hate the other brands vehicle. Both brands of computer have their advocates, although you always feel more comfortable with the brand you know the best.

It depends on what you need it for. Mac is most for designers and stuff. And PC is for everyone else.
