I am assuming that you are referring to a cotton shirt or cotton/linen blend. If so, then use some spray starch (I use Niagara Spray Starch). First off, make sure your iron is set to the proper fabric setting. Do NOT use steam.

Make sure you shake well before using. Keep can about 8-10 inches away from the fabric and then lightly spray. Do the collar first (you should spray the inside of the fabric when you do this), then the cuffs and the seam down the middle of the shirt. Hang on a hanger and Voila! Crispy and stiff.

If you are trying to make a delicate fabric "stiff" or "crispy", such as rayon, I would advise against that because those fabrics are made for movement.

Hope this helps!

Have it drycleaned and specify heavy starch. It usually holds up through a couple of washes on the gentle cycle. Of course, some touch up ironing needed.
