If you do not chart or monitor your fertility in any way, and you think you may have conceived, you should wait 19 days (or longer) after having sex to test. Why 19?! Sperm can live approximately 5 days in the proper environment; if the sperm managed to live until you popped an egg, the actual conception could have taken place several days after the sex act that got the sperm there. To make sure you're not testing too early, assume the sperm had very long lives (5 days is considered a very long sperm life) and that conception occurred then. Then allow 14 days for the embryo to implant and develop enough hCG to show up on a pregnancy test (96% of pregnant women will test positive by then.)

You have to keep a careful record of your periods each month and see how many days there are from the start of one period until the start of the next period. Take an average of these days. Ovulation usually occurs 14 days PRIOR to the first day of your period. If you have a 28 day cycle, then ovulation occurs on cycle day #14. If you have a 30 day cycle, ovulation occurs on cycle day #16. You can conceive if you have sex one day prior to ovulation and up to two days after ovulation. Therefore, if you ovulate on cycle day #14, you can conceive if you have sex on cycle day #13, 14, 15, or 16. If you do, indeed, become pregnant on one ot those days, a pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days later. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after you miss your next period.

It really depends on when you had your last period. If it is regular then you can take a test the day of your missed period.
