I save all my change in a jar and cash it in once every 6 months or so. I use coupons at the store and I shop the ads. I go to Delaware to make major purchases because there is no sales tax. (it's only a 40 minute drive for me) I buy things at yard sales as long as they are in very good condition....a real money saver. I check car insurance rates to make sure I am getting the very best rate possible. I rent movies from the library...free.

I dropped cable tv, and signed up for Blockbuster Online Movie Rental instead - it costs about $19.50 per month (that's the total - tax and all) and can rent between 24-30 movies per month at no cost above the $19.50. I watch the movies I want to watch, when I want to watch them, no hassles - and it's saving me $40+ per month! (roughly $500 per year)

Also, I do clip coupons - but ONLY for items I already use regularly. You're not saving money if you use a $2 off coupon for a product that will just sit on your cabinet indefinitely. And I buy my groceries mostly at Wal-Mart - because even without a sale, their prices can not be beat, and often beat other grocer's even when you include coupon savings.

I also regulate the heat and ac unit in my home. I keep my heat set at 68 degrees - and dress warmly around the house - sweats, sweaters, socks, slippers, etc. In the summer, we set it at about 76 degrees and dress accordingly - lightweight cotton t's, shorts, flip flops, etc. You will be surprised at how quickly you can become accustomed to these temps - and amazed at what a big difference it makes on your utility bills.

I don't pay extra for the highest speed of dsl that exists. I don't do anything at home that requires the fastest dsl, so I pay less for DSL light - I am able to reasonably quickly view videos, very quickly download music, quick surfing, etc. I save quite a bit through my ISP - DSL lite is a full $35+ per month less than their current fastest DSL.

I cook dinner often, and make eating out a special occassion for me and my daughter. I have become a rather good cook this way, and I am able to take leftovers to work for lunch, instead of buying lunch out at fast food. It's healthier, tastes better, and with the average "value" meal running between $6 and $7 after upsize and taxes, I save $32.50 a week! That's $130/month for folks who eat out every day. Let's say you eat out only half of the time each month - that's still a yearly expense of $780 that you can save by simply brown baggin' it!

I could go on and on, but these are the biggest areas that I am able to cut careless spending and really save.

Turn off lights in rooms when I leave them,
RAMEN NOODLES, Cup-a-soup, Mac 'N Cheese,
Timer on the water heater, (If you sleep nights and are up or work days, why do you need hot water-on-demand at 2:00am? Set your timer to come on @ 4:00pm and to go off again @ 10:00pm. You'll save a BUNDLE!)
Timer on the food freezers, (Most people don't realize that once all the food is frozen, it will remain frozen for several hours without power as long as the door stays closed. Set a timer for three-hour cycles of OFF and ON.)

don't drink (rarely)
don't smoke
shop at wal mart
re-wash plastic silverware
use paper plates twice if they just had like a sandwich on them or something
get my hubby to trim my hair when it gets too long
do my own vehicle maintenance whenever possible
keep the thermostat no higher than 68 degrees
wash all my clothes in cold water (they get just as clean either way)
buy the store brand on most products

and the polite term is "frugal" thank you

Always check out outlet stores, don't buy designer unless in sales, never buy processed food, fresh only. Walk lots, saves on petrol and fares.
