The Shining is perhaps the best made horror movie ever.

The Silence of the Lambs has the best villian of all time in Mr. Lechter.

The Exorcist is the most shocking and disturbing.

I think that not everyone finds the same things "scary"... some people are terrified by snakes, so they find movies with snakes to be the scariest (this is an example)
In my case, I didn't find "The Shinning" scary at all... but... "The Hills Have Eyes" gave me nightmares! All because I kept thinking "What if something like that happened TO ME, and I had to go save my baby girl....?".... (it gives me the goose bumps!)

But I do think that "The Shinning" is a very good horror movie, well made.

The Exorcist or the Amitteville Horror. Also I once saw a home movie and there was a shot of the mother in law getting up out of bed in the morning and believe me it was the scariest thing I ever saw in my entire life . Im still having nightmares about it ..

The original Shining with Jack Nicholson is my favorite, but I also like Frailty with Bill Paxton. You've probably noticed a slew of American remakes of Japanese horror films like Dark Water and The Grudge, but to be honest, the original Japanese versions are much better, especially the original Dark Water. Just be prepared to read subtitles though.

If I can get through the Shining then it is not the scariest movie in history. Try Even Horizon. Very, very scary if I remember correctly.

I wouldn't say that the Shinning is scary... but a specific movie title escapes my mind. Horror movies just aren't that scary.

no way, the Exorcist is by far the scariest movie

I like scary movies, I'm 22, and I still can't watch the Exorcist
