I'm assuming the question means: How long does an NFL player play before he retires, on average?
It varies from position to position.
Kickers and Punters last forever it seems like. I'd say they could play 20 years or so if they wanted to.
Quarterbacks usually last longer than other skill positions, probably 12-15 years.
Most other positions I would guess around 8 - 10 years.
It varies depending on injuries and so forth. Those are just rough estimates. They won't always start for all of these years, but they are capable for them I'd say.

Did a search on the Internet. According to the website (which claims its info from NFL Players Association survey), "the average career span of an NFL player is three and a half full seasons" The article did not specify if it was counting strictly by seasons or by games (ex. does the pro play for about 3 1/2 years or does the pro play for more years, but his total games add up to about 3 1/2 seasons of consecutive play). My guess is probably the latter, because players like Peyton Manning have played for 9 years and players often get injured and miss games.

running backs and receivers usually have a shorter life span for playing time than lineman and defensive players do.
I would have to say 5 to 7 years conservatively for offensive players,in their optimum years .
You probably could drag out it out further with playing not at top level, but their are exceptions of course. Brett Favre,Marcus Allen to name a couple of guys that have extended their careers. This is not the norm however.
Many players turn to coaching afterwards,or in broadcasting,if you have the personality or the talent to do that.
I would say 10 years (tops) to be on the upper average of players who might be lucky enough to make it that long ,depending on any injuries suffered during the career.
Bo Jackson,Joe Theisman, had shortened careers due to their injuries.
Although kickers seem to have a longer life on the field,Morten Anderson,Garo Yapremium, two kickers that have had longer career playing lives..and of course the legend of the Oakland Raiders George Blanda . Who doubled as a kicker ,and quarterback towards the end of his career and did quite well at it ,he was forced into it because of injuries to the starting QB.
Good luck and make sure you have a backup with your career decision,in some kind of work in a different field,or perhaps coaching after your career is finished.
The other guy is wrong, quarterbacks do no last 15 years, they get hit harder and more frequently than any other player ,except for running backs and receivers.
Many players because of the love for the game go to other teams after making a name for themselves with a team.
Bruce Smith went to the Redskins after having a Hall of Fame career with the Buffalo Bills, and that mostly because of the training coach Rusty Jones, who streamlined Bruce's physicque ,he was way overweight and out of shape when he first came to the Buffalo Bills.
