I'm using AVG Anti Spyware, Spybot Search&Destroy as well as Windows Defender. I think I have a great team. Windows Defender seems quite lenient in its removal of cookies but very good at detecting changes made to your computer settings by programs you are installing. AVG AS is more strict with cookies. I think I would recommend Spybot Search&Destroy because it is completely free. AVG AS is a trail software but can still be updated manually and used after the trial period is over(30days). It only loses its resident shield after the trial period.... WD comes free if you are using genuine Windows XP.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

You can try this web-based spyware scanner from Trend: http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan
I have never used it, but I imagine it is fairly slow because it runs over the web.
Alternatively, you could go download a program like Ad -Aware or Spybot and install them on your PC and scan yourself.

Lavasoft has a free version called AD-WARE. You can download it from Lavasoft website or Download.com. Also, Microsoft has a pretty good program.

After you get your self cleaned up, keep clean by using the Internet Freedom Disk when you surf. (see video in link below).
It's free! It locks your hard drive in a virtual vault while you surf
