Montana is a wonderful place for people who appreciate a laid back wholesome quality of life and have an appreciation for the great outdoors. You will find property there much cheaper than in NY. Be prepared to live a different lifestyle though, one you may not like.
The people will be friendlier and more sincere. On the other hand they will expect strict adherence to rules, both written and unwritten.
The best thing to do when considering a life changing move is to visit the place for a couple of weeks and see if it offers you more on a personal level than where you want to leave from.
Personally I would never live in NY but would relocate to Montana if I had the opportunity.

the western half of Montana is where you want to be and it is great,but good jobs are hard to find and housing in the western half is expensive but the lifestyle is great.
