According to the ancient Greeks the race of centaurs came about when a king wanted Hera, Queen of the gods for his wife. Zeus changed a cloud into her likeness and sent it to hte king in her place. It was the union of said king and that cloud that produced the centaurs the most are familiar with. Their exsistance was a punishment to that king for his arrogance and as they were the product of lust they were themsleves full of lust and greed. Eating, drinking and wenching throught his land, sending it into ruin.
There was also a second race of centaurs that were of divine origin (like the Fanus and Satyrs) that were peaceful and enlightened. One of them Chiron, was a great teacher and instructed such heroes and Hercules and Jason as well as Aesclepious, the first physician.

I don't know what the myths say of their origin.
But the latin word centaur is from the greek word kentauros, which was a tribe of expert horse warriors (real people on horseback) in Thessaly (above Greece).
A funny aside is that people used to believe that Ostriches were a cross between a fly and a giraff. lol

No! And don't ever ask a Centaur if you enjoy living. They take it personally. They are children of Ixion, the king of Lapithae (Thessaly), and a cloud shaped like Hera. (Darn Zeus for not wanting to share his wife.) But really, don't ask a Centaur.

No, centaurs are like mermaids are a separate species not from inter species sex. Also, contrary to popular belief mermaids aren't half human half fish.Fish and humans are not even similar species. They are more like half human and half dolphin, or seal. But they are not really part human, but very like human.

No, they are a species of their own that happens to look like that. Just like Fauns have goat hooves but are not descended from them.

You should read Ovid's Metamorphosis. It will give you an idea of how many living things came about.through actions of a pantheon of gods . . at least as Ovid perceived they came about.
