1) Self-confidence enables a person to make clear decisions and it helps others to believe in those decisions. If your doctor seemed uncertain about her/his diagnosis you would probably seek out another.

2)Examining the "inner voice" that may be critical and causing low self-esteem would be a great start. This site gives some simple, but complete answers: http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/question/emotions/self_esteem.html

I also think professional counseling might be in order. Talk therapy can be useful, esp. for a professional whose life will have a great impact on others' lives.

3)It's not so much behavior that detracts from confidence. I think that lack of confidence comes from inside and that is why sometimes a professional is needed to improve confidence. However, there are signs of low self-esteem that people aren't always aware that they give to others. Some include, lack of eye contact when talking to others, constantly apologizing for your very existence. Etc.

4***** I hope that these help! I know what it is to suffer from low self-esteem and it's worth the effort to improve it!

1. If i was to go to a Doctor that doesn't seem very confident i might second guess his advice.
2. Understand as much as you can about your specific Doc area. So when you talk you are talking from knowledge not just what you "think". b/c everyone has opinions they are like...well you know the saying.
3. I think it's just in your presence as a person, some people are just confident people. Example my father's a doc and always looks like he "knows" what he is talking about even if he doesn't. Also if you are a Doctor remember you only have one first impression so don't waste it!
Good luck to you!!

Self-confidence is extremely emportant for a doctor because patients are depending on him for their health. If a doctor shows any lack of confidence in his job, I would not want that doctor to touch me.

For a male doctor I would recommend the book "Man of steel and velvet" by Aubrey Andelin. It's not about medicine, but it will help increase any man's confidence. Its main subject is what being a man is all about. Confidence is a major part.

A lack of preparation will negatively affect anyone's confidence. Read Read Read! Study Study Study! And work hard.
