In a hot country, like Greece, with lots of slaves and citizens involved labouring in arguculture, eating salt and water is essential, as you lose so much in the heat.

It's pretty surprising that the British ruling elite didn't learn anything - the same Royal family lost the American colonies over a token tax on tea being imported into Boston, which was also considered pointless and unjust.
