Use muffler putty to block up the hole, and muffler bandage or muffler tape to keep the putty in place. Always work on a cold exhaust - besides possible burns, the tape will become loose when the car cools down. After all is patched and tight, drive gently for a half hour or so, so the heat can dry and cure the putty and tape (don't put your foot down, or you'll blow the patch out!) This sort of fix should last a few months, but be ready for it to eventually blow. You'll need to buy a new muffler at this point, but at least you've had time to save a bit, and to shop around for the best price.

If you're talking about a stop-gap fix (which is all a patch is, after all), head to your local auto parts shop and buy a muffler patch kit. That'll do for a few months before the hole gets bigger and she'll then need the muffler.

You can try muffler tape of a metal based epoxy.
However, the correct thing to do is to get the muffler replaced.
