It has been about three days sense I havent fed my two oscars, because I hurt my back real bad and doc. wants me on bed rest.Is there anything , anything at all I could feed them??I know about the beef heart, which I dont have. Ca'nt go outside and get worms. Can they eat bread , crackers..please help,, And another thing. Do they sleep. I have been wanting to ask this question for a long time.Do oscars sleep?? Because we have our oscars out by the kitchen and we shut off all the lights. Well, I get up at night to get something to drink.I will turn the lights on and both oscars are floating on top of the water on their side, like they are asleep. Then the light must scare them or something because they start to jump and splash. Lord, I've never seen this. I thought they was coming up out of the tank.So I figure they was asleep and the olighht came on and scared them. Does anybody agree????

I had an Oscar that went on a 6 month hunger strike and then one day just resumed eating as if nothing had happened. It's very hard to starve a fish! Don't put a bunch of crap in the water, just wait until you can get proper food. About the lights, turning on bright lights in the middle of the night is very bad for any fish, and should be avoided if possible. The shock of sudden light stresses the fish badly. If a way can be found to raise the light gradually(like maybe lights in an adjacent room first,or a small night light near the tank, your fish will be much happier. Good luck with your back problem and good luck to your fish.-----PeeTee

the form of Oscar you get purely relies upon on which one you want better. people save putting forward that the albinos are a lot less hardy then the darker colored lines, I have not got here upon this to be authentic, I have saved many diverse Oscars and for the exception of untamed Oscars, they're all exceptionally a lot a similar. i'm now unlikely to inform you that a fifty 5 is too small for a unmarried Oscar, regardless of the indisputable fact that it really is the minimum, with a tank of that length it isn't effective to operate the different fish in the different case you're able to have aggression subject matters contained in the destiny at the same time as the fish commence to mature and strengthen. in case you upgraded the tank contained in the destiny you ought to upload a tankmate or 2, it purely relies upon on the dimensions of the tank you get. Severums make tremendous tankmates for Oscars, they're non violent yet are waiting to submit with the Oscars difficult personality. also Clown loaches make solid tankmates, yet should be about a similar length or higher so now to not be regardless of the reality that of as nutrition. again regardless of the reality that, i do not propose getting the different fish to flow with the Oscar in that length tank, even a seventy 5 gallon is to small to very actual save the different fish with an Oscar. in case you do you'd be inquiring for aggression subject matters contained in the subsequent 3 hundred and sixty 5 days or so. Oscars will eat just about anything meaty. Just don't let them make a mess out of the tank- bread, etc., will do just that.
All fish sleep in the sense they need 'down' time. But, since they have no eye lids, having the lights on all the time isn't good for them or any fish.
If you fish don't eat for a few days or even a week, they'll be fine. It's better to get them proper food instead of tossing left overs in the tank.

Is there no one else who can feed them? Oscars are surprisingly susceptible to malnutrition, and although they could subsist on "human" foods for a week or two, it could cause illness for them in the future if they are kept on an innapropriate diet for too long. Some stuff you could find around the house to feed them would be: rinsed tuna / salmon, shrimp pieces, pieces of fish, pieces of meat. Avoid feeding them food with too much carbs like vegetables and bread and pasta.
If you're going to be bedridden for more than a week or two, I would advise trying to arrange for an alternate option to keep them well fed. You could try locating your local fish club - I'm sure if you posted online explaining your situation that someone would be more than happy to drop by with a bottle of cichlid pellets. You could also phone nearby petstores - most will probably not help you but you'd be surprised what some petstore people are willing to do to make a name for themselves.
As for the sleeping thing, no, fish do not sleep. At night, they may settle into a nook or just float and be "half asleep" - but their brain is still alert (and of course their eyes are open) in case of predators etc. It is not normal for your oscars to be lying on their sides at night.

They definitely don't sleep laying on their sides so I don't know what is up with that. There are pellets you can buy at the pet store to feed Oscars but maybe you can't make it there right now. What about a small strip of raw chicken. I wouldn't worry to much since they can go weeks without food when needed.

It is better to let them fast a few days than to feed them food they shouldn't have. Cichlids and labyrinth fish sleep still, sometimes on their sides or floating vertical head up or down. I wouldn't be surprised if your slept on their sides. They don't have eyelids so turn the lights on slowly if you can or turn a light on in an adjcent room that give you enough light in the kitchen to see.
