i have this rabbit for the last 2 years. i dont know how old he is exactly since i found him back then. i figured he is now 3 to 4 years old. and the problem is that in the last 3 weeks, he has been shedding like crazy. i mean big time. i kind of predict its because of the odd warm weather here in italy, but im starting to think....

do all rabbits of these breed shed so so so much when the weather is like this?

i dont know what the name of this breed is, but you can see pics of him here:

just to give you an idea of how much he sheds, there are tumble weeds of his fur every single day inside the house. no matter how much i brush him and bath him daily it keeps on falling off and he isnt going bald or anything.

my question, has this happened to your rabbit? do certain rabbits naturally shed to the extreme likethis one?

I have to agree and say that I think he is all or at least partly a French Lop. I have good news for you! Your rabbit isn't going to go bald and he's not overly stressed. Your rabbit is going through the natural process of shedding his coat. This process (even though it might make sense to be) is independent of weather for the most part. It has more to do with the seasons being changed and my rabbits tend to shed around the same time of year (within a few weeks of each other) no matter what the weather is. It may seem like a lot of hair he's shedding, but you have to remember, the furcoat of a rabbit is made up of two different types of hairs. There are shorter hairs called the underhair or underfur and then there are longer hairs typically called guard hairs. So it may not look like a lot of hair on him but it's both densely packed on his skin and folded down. Once that hair has fallen off and fluffled up, it looks like quite a bit. So as I say, it's not all that much. The other reason I say you shouldn't be worried is that if the hair loss was due to too much stress or a disease, he would be getting bald spots rather then a nice even shedding. The only thing I would do for him is keep up the grooming so that he doesn't ingest too much hair from grooming himself. Hairballs (unlike cats) can be fatal for rabbits as they don't havethe reflexes for yaking them back up. If you want to help keep his GI tract smooth (as an extra precaution) while he's shedding, give him a bit of pineapple or broccli. They help to break down the hair in his GI tract and keep hairballs from forming.

This disease, unfortunately crops up every so often, it is always fatal, the only prevention is the injection.I don't own a rabbit, but I would encourage anyone who has a rabbit in a garden or near open fields i.e wild rabbit haunts, to have this done. Over the years I have had the misfortune to find several rabbits dyeing of myxomatosis,it is a terrible thing to see !

I think your rabbit is a French lop rabbit. The french lop rabbit is one of the larger breeds. weighing 4.5-6 kgs. The french lop rabbit is calm, good natured and affectionate making it an excellent pet. The average life span is 5-7 years. French Lop rabbits molt. They usually do this once a year. Sometimes, though, you might find your rabbit in a white cloud of molting fur. There can be so much fur,in fact it might look like a doe has been trying to turn her whole cage into a nest. I hope this helps. good luck!

It could be stress or the weather. My rabbit sheds in huge chunks, and sometimes looks like he's going bald because of how short the hair underneath is. As long as he has hair growing back in (no actual bald spots), the vet said it is okay. I actually have a Netherland Dwarf, not a full size lop like yours, but I'm assuming it is fairly similar.

By the way--he is way cute!

all rabbits shed either because it is getting warm and to much fur will make them even hotter they also do this to get rid of old fur when they start growing more
