You should NOT stop any medications (prescription) until you speak with your doctor!!! I myself was on Paxil before I found out I was pregnant...at around 6 weeks I got an appt with my OBGYN where she put me on a schedule to slowly get off Paxil. You need to be VERY careful with stopping a drug like Paxil. It has some of the worst withdrawl symptoms of any anti-depressants...I was very, very slowly (over a period of about 2 months) weaned off the medicine under the direction and supervision of my doctor...you can't do it yourself. Trust me....DO NOT suddenly stop taking the medication...you need to talk to your doctor before you stop!

Trust me...I have been through going off Paxil and it is brutal...DO NOT do it without a doctor.

I don't think it's an emergency that you need to stop right this minute, but I would call your obstetrician as soon as possible to ask (or your psychiatrist if you have one). There have been some new studies saying Paxil can be harmful to a fetus, but the doctor always wants to weigh the risk of harm to you for NOT taking it against the potential risk to the fetus if you do take it.

You're not supposed to just stop anti-depressants cold turkey without medical supervision, it may cause problems for you, especially if you're on a high dose.

My sister tried quitting Paxil a few times before she was actually able to do it (to switch to another medication, no because of pregnancy). Paxil is an especially hard SSRI for people to quit, and should be done under a doctor's supervision. My sister, who had never had suicidal ideations as part of her depression, became borderline suicidal when trying to get off Paxil. It will be especially important for you to carefully plan your pregnancy because of the drug.

Paxil is not something that you can just stop taking without having some side effects. You need to taper off and consult a physician ASAP. Paxil is probably the worst anti-depressant that one can take while pregnant. It is known to cause numerous birth defects...Zoloft is one of the safest.

I am sorry to hear of your dilemma and advise that you use extra precaution in the future to guard against pregnancy while on Paxil.

If there is a chance you may be pregnant then I would stop it. Although at one point doctors said Paxil was safe to take during pregnancy it is now being linked to heart defects and pulmonary hypertension in the babies. Obviously you need to call your doctor and let them know what is going on and they can advise you as well. They may know a little better on whether you should just stop taking them or wean yourself off them and they may have a safer alternative for you to take.

Never stop anti-depressants without consulting a doctor. Generally stopping all at once is not advisable.

IF you are planning to get pregnant OR if you are not willing to use two forms of reliable birth control you should ONLY be on medications that are safe during pregnancy. There are many antidepressants that are safe during pregnancy, you need to either find one that is or be very careful not to become pregnant.

You should immediately go to the doctor, blood tests can be preformed sooner than urine tests. You should also use the opportunity to discuss either different antidepressants or different birth control options.

My best friend was on Paxil her entire pregnancy. There didnt seem to be any problems with it.
Her doctor told her it was her choice but as of right now, ther are no studies showing it is dangerous.

You should call your doctor right away. While there is a risk of birth defects when taking this med, sometimes the risk to you of stopping abruptly is far worse than the risk to the baby. Abruptly stopping many types of meds can have devistating effects. Only your doctor can help answer what is right for you and your situation. Good luck, and call him/her NOW.
