You can, only if you reformat your hard drive. Microsoft will scan you exciting os for authentication. If it's not right your cant do it.
Also make sure your computer is compatible. Lots of lower end system are not.

You sure can. Windows is not going to authenticate your old version of Windows XP.
While it's installing Vista in setup it will look for previous versions of Windows, but it doesn't care if you have a bootleg copy of the previous version of Windows.

If your version of window came pre installed on a computer like from dell, gateway, hp etc then you will not be able to upgrade also if you have an OEM copy of window you will not be able to upgrade..Only retail versions of XP will allow you to upgrade to the new OS...Is one of Microsoft crappy rules...my opinion

I believe so -- if you install Vista over XP, it will work fine since Vista is a completely new operating system.

Yes they do or did give you an option to validate your copy. My wife did. I think you click on validate and them contact Microsoft. You gotta pay money but then you get a real copy and no reinstall.
