Plato was only ancient that mentions it; though he claims to have gotten this from the Egyptians (maybe had something to do with the Sea People?). Anyway, Plato used it for setting of his perfect society.

No one else mentions it as a real place until some psychics and writers of the 19th & 20th centuries. Burroughs? I think started the whole idea of speculating it to be a real place.

All kinds of suggestions as to its location from different sources. These are not sources like Plato but either psychics or various interpretations of Plato's, which places it "beyond the Pillars of Hercules". This is believed to be Gibralter, at the mouth of the mediteranean sea; so it has always been assumed that this meant somewhere in the atlantic.

Divers have found giant geometric rock formations off the eastern coast of usa, which look very much like part of an ancient road; some old 15th century map includes an unkown land that fits pretty well over antartica. Those are two examples made of Atlantis' location.

And, of course, we now have Stargate Atlantis, which puts its location on another planet.

Hope this helps; sorry thats all I remember off hand.

It doesn't exist
Basic source of the atlantis legend are Platons books Kritias and Timaios.
First of all, we need to know that Platon was not a historian, but a philosopher and didn't care for historical correctness.
He describes Atlantis to praise Athens (his hometown), so its quite easy to unmask as propaganda.
In brief, he says :
Atlantis existed 9500 BC. and conquered most of europe and the north of africa (unlikely in itself)
Athens beat Atlantis and stopped it from conquering Greece (unlikely, 9500 BC. Athens was no more than a small village, if it had existed at that time at all)
Atlantis was bigger than Libya and Asia together (oh come on)
and was destroyed by a floowave and an earthquake that destroyed Greece as well.
All that knowledge was being kept by the egyptian city of Sais
which was founded 1000 years after Atlantis, according to Plato ,was destroyed)

You see, pretty hard to believe.

The only ones who still believe it, are non-academic treasure hunters and dreamers.

I know that the Braves and Falcons play there. Coca Cola's headquarters is there. And it's in Georgia.

Oh wait, that's Atlanta.

I know something about Atlantis, the 60's singer Donovan wrote a song about it and it was featured in the movie "Goodfellas".

That it is possibly based off the island of Santorini. The island used to be round, but a huge volcanic explosion blasted most of the island out into sea, so that now it is crescent shaped.

I think it's possible. Like when the pirate port of Port Royal sunk due to an earthquake. I don't know that much about it though, so based on my limited knowledge, I'm skeptical about the stuff I've heard about it being a really advanced society. I think the part about it sinking is possible though.

It was located in the Adriactic Sea and is not nearly as ancient as the myth indicates.

In my science fiction series, though, I place it more in the Mediterranean valley (not sea). When the sea flooded the last time, it wiped out an entire civilization.

It is up for sale again. Pretty expensive due to the expense of maintaining the public perception that it is mythical.
