The epicureans proposed a life filled with pleasure (hedonism) not only physically but also intellectual and emotional. For Epicure DE Samosa, having a pleasant life is having a life without pains, so in order to achieve happiness, you must full filled your life with all goodness. This kind of thinking it was more then a theory, it was a practice. The main goal was to achieve the "ataraxia" meaning a peace full life.

The stoics, mainly Seneca, Zenon DE Ciro, among others had the opposite kind of thinking. A virtuous life, followed by giving up and self control it was the only way to achieve this "ataraxia". According to them, if you release your Passions you ll be able to feel free and achieve wisdom. Some oriental religions, like the Buddhism they still keep this type of thinking. In order to achieve happiness and soul peace, its only by renounce Passions.

The cynics evolved the thoughts and philosophy of Socrates, the main figures of this type of thinking are Diogenes and Antistenes. Social life was wrong for the human being. The best way it was to try to follow a simple life according to nature. They believed that by nature, the man kind was pure and good and its key of happiness was with in. Having a life of belongins and complications makes you unhappy by all the stuff you need to worry.

The phythagorians are mainly people that think everything is maths and numbers (astronomy, music, philosophy and everything can be understood by maths and numbers). Pretty much scientifics today! :P
