I understand E! and Vh1 and Entertainment Tonight covering the story, but not CNN. Was it a slow news day for US issues in Iraq, Iran, China and North Korea and in global warming, immigration and other real issues, or what?

That reflects either on the quality of news broadcasting or that they perceive the society is made up of lightweights who can only think in terms of celebrities and fluff news. Yeah, there is a war on and a dozen other really important stories but thats what NBC Nightly News led with and the 24 cable news people went to a live broadcast at the scene, for hours, and reported essentially the same thing over and over. Yeah, the news people are trashy or they are sure we are...either way it ain't a good sign!

Anna Nicole Smith's death is a major event of the Hollywood life with a lot of implications and links. It is a very fishy event that mirrors the degeneracy of the society in which we live : greed, drugs, lies, blackmail, family problems and loose morals. On top of that the truth about her death and the paternity of her little girl must be looked for. IMHO I think that this photographer was not the father of the little girl nor her lawyer, Anna knew it and did not want the DNA test gave evidence she had slept with another man. It is probably what her lover and lawyer Stern advised her to do in order to avoid bad publicity and scandal. It is not drugs that killed her, it is the pressure of the bloody Hollywood paparazzi. They should be sent to jail. They have no mercy, they understand nothing and it is good that decent networks like CNN are still interested in covering the event with some respect for her memory. Because her death is a very sad event. And personally I have enough of reporting about Iran, Korea and other mass murders of this kind...

The line between actual news and entertainment has been blurred for a very, very long time.

This is the same thing as Entertainment Tonight reporting on the Lacey Peterson case, when neither Scott nor Lacey were celebrities prior to her murder.

This is what a 24/7 cable news media has wrought.

It's all pretty much negative bad news anyway, besides they only tell us what they want us to know anyway. Reading a news paper is just as bad anymore. I say any loss of life is tragic, and I silently rejoice that they are no longer are being exposed to the horrible pressures and stresses, here on earth, now they're suffering is over. Lifted up by the hand of God into heaven for a more meaningful mission. Mourn the living dead-not the dead. Live each day as if it were your last and have no regrets.

I think it's really sad that Anna Nicole Smith has passed away. I pray for her daughter that she will have a happy life. From what I have seen on the news Anna's daughter is going to be a very wealthy child indeed I heard that there is still an argument over how much that child will get whatever still that child will be very wealthy.

Good question -- why?
Well first people want to see it and they will change channels in order to see what they want. CNN must show news-worthy content in order to compete and in order to fulfill their obligation to their advertisers.
Second, the news media is controlled by massive corporations which want you to see fluff instead of the horror perpetrated by the Bush administration. Even investigative reporting is watered-down now.
She is portrayed as a celebrity sex symbol and pop icon but the person on the street does not see it this way. We have become a society that is instructed by the TV and we accept its opinions and make them ours.

Just goes to show you, the mainstream media is not about what's important.

Seek multiple news sources, or you're sunk.

Everybody's biased, some more than others. That includes media, and it includes viewers/readers.

Because the "news" today isn't really about news, but about sensationalism and they think everyone actually care about E-list celebrities.
