Hey Fred, who do you think you are Sherman marching to the sea. The civil war has been over for 150 years.

There are several replies here from people in need of a history lesson. As far as the goober asking the question. Look up black confederates, and I'm afraid you're in for a rude awakening. The Civil War was not about slavery. The north outlawed slavery to keep the English and French from forming any allegiance with the southern states. It was a military decision and nothing more. Lincoln was even quoted as saying he would outlaw "or" make slavery legal in every state if it would win the war. As far as the wary, it ended over a hundred years ago. The southern states paid for it over many years, many times at the hands of norther politicians still holding grudges.
Now to address the modern racist. You posed the question and obviously already have a prejudiced view of a given group of people. You appear to define the very thing you detest in you question.
I live in the deep south, and races down here have been mixed for years. There will always be racists on both sides, but very few in number. Judging and entire region of the country based upon the behavior of a handful of individuals is not an intelligent act.

Its good to be able to totally ignore history. Remember, it was Africans who sold tribes into slavery... and continue to do so to this day.
Secondly, the civil war was actually a war for the rights of state's to govern themselves without federal interference. You are surely aware that only a very rich few confederate soldiers had slaves, aren't you?
The emancipation proclaimation was not passed by the democratic controlled congress and was only implemented by the executive order of Lincoln as Commander in Chief. It was not only a moral issue, in his opinion, but was also a political move to prevent England and France (who opposed slavery) from aiding the confederates.
The war was fought more than 230 years ago. The confederate flag has no meaning now toward slavery, black oppression or anything related to thereof. Most blacks who rant away at the topic are actually those who have an axe to grind with the white race and simply use the flag as a means to an end.

Well, I'm glad that I've gotten a history lesson today. Apparently, I have killed many "blacks and indians" in worse ways than Hitler. And apparently I have no ability to think or act in any way, unless it is "barbaric."
I'm sorry that people like you exist. Ignorance towards history. "Southeners" may not be a "race," but this is the largest example of racism I have seen in my lifetime. The Civil War WAS about slavery, but a majority of people in the south were not in favor of brutally killing/maiming slaves. Slaves, during the time, were property. Black slaves were vital to the agricultural industries of the South. When comparing killing slaves to today's world, it would be like a farmer purchasing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of farm equipment (no, I'm not comparing slaves to farm equipment) and then destroying it completely.
I am NOT saying slavery is good, but I am defending the actions of the South. Succession was more about STATE RIGHTS than it was slavery, though slavery had a HUGE part in it. Remember, up until the Civil War, there were slaves in EVERY state of the Union.
The Confederate flag represented the Confederacy. It wasn't to promote the killing of blacks during the Civil War (though it did come to represent discrimination during the civil rights movement, but that isn't the point here). It was a way to identify themselves, just as the American flag identified the Union soliders on the battlefield. Remember, it uses the same colors and symbols as our own national colors.
Also, learn your history. "Southerners" did not commit more attacks and "brutal acts" on Indians and blacks than Hitler or Stalin. Europeans, during the expeditions to the Americas (both North and South America) killed many more, even if many were not directly. Entire civilizations were wiped out by the Spanish in modern-day Mexico and Central America. Should we kill all Spanish people because of what their ancestors did?
The best advice I can give you is to take a history class or two before asking another question filled with bigotry. You have insulted my family, as well as my ancestors. And I'll have you know also that most southerners are NOT evil, hate filled people. We are AMERICANS. There is not one American, from the North or South, alive today who has owned a slave before the Civil War. Now, I'm not saying there is no racism in America. It does exist. However, ideals like the ones you have placed here today do not help curb this racism.
As an American, a Southerner, and a CHEROKEE INDIAN, I am appauled at your lack of knowledge or respect towards others who live in the same nation as you. Hopefully this will enlighten you to get a broader knowledge base before making unjustified stereotypes.

There are no confederat veterens alive today. You expose your facist agenda with your desire to use humans as lab rats (sieg hiel you little nazi) The confederacy no longer exsists so thiere is no price that can be extracted from them. Today more blacks are killed and brutalized by other blacks than by all the southern rednecks in America. The south was held responsible for thier actions during the reconstruction era. Stop living in the past, get over your bigotry you will feel better if you do

ok a few things from someone who lives in the south. actually south carolina, so do some reading and you'll realize why this flag is a hot topic for any south carolinian. i for one, dispise the confederate flag, even though i am a white, southerner. south carolina still displayed a confederate flag on top of the state capital building. it was originally put there to protest the first black judge nominated in SC. so we had a huge debate a few years ago about getting the flag removed. finally, it was removed, but placed directly in front of the building. to me this was an insult, as it just put it in front so everybody can see it. while most claim the flag to be nothing more than "heritage," thats just a cover up to the deep racial beliefs that still surge in SC. i am one that believes the flag should be placed in a museum with other historical things.
however, i do not think in any way, shape, or fashion you can say that the confederates were worse than the nazis or the reds. that is just not historically accurate. the confederates never attempted to eliminate an entire race. they also didnt torture people like stalin did. these were there workers, so why would they torture and kill them? yes, they did beat them from time to time, but never to the level of either of the two examples you gave above. its just not true.
finally, dont lump all southerners in with the few crazies. everybody isnt the same down here you know.

well the swastika did not stand for nothing but that country for many years till Hitler. as for the southern flag popped up at a point when the south was told no more slavery but they did not want to change and try ed to cut off from the rest of the USA. however in most cases its just a flag and people need to let this history be HISTORY as it it really is meaningless to dwell on such bull$#!7 in order to start making the further
