Here's what we need: Roomy enough for two adults, a baby, a 160 lb. dog, a stroller, and a dog ramp. NOT an SUV (nothing high up). Excellent gas mileage. Not too pricey (we're looking to buy a 2005 or 2006 model for $23K or less)

We're stumped. The closest we can find is a Subaru Forester, but the gas mileage is not great.

Any suggestions?

I highly recommend the Subaru Forester, or at least go for a test drive. I bought an 2007 Forester and couldn't be happier. I find the Forester has above average gas mileage, at least compared to my old Nissan, and should have enough room for you, your husband, the baby and the dog. I live in the Northeast where it snows/rains a lot and this car is great in all weather conditions. The hatchback area is also a lot bigger than it looks, and it has a cool roof rack if I ever decide to take some cross country trips or something LOL. The one issue you may have is if you or your husband is very tall, in which case the back seat may be a little cramped. If safety is your primary concern, which I imagine it may be considering you have a little one, the Subaru is very safe. I did lots of research before I laid down my money and the Forester had great ratings all around. I also bought mine for less than 23K.

Honda Ridgeline - 2006 Truck of the Year

Fuel efficient and very reliable. Not to mention it looks good too. You could get a used 2006 for about 22K.

I think the Mazda Tribute definitely meets your needs. Great car, roomy, excellent mileage for its size, reliable, and not too expensive. You can get an '06 from $20,115.
