Could be anything. You need to give more detail on what failed.

There are typically 3 components to a smog check.
HC levels: Hydrocarbon levels
CO levels: Carbon Monoxide Levels
NOx levels: Nitrous oxide levels.

Each of these components are monitored and have different emissions devices that reduce a particular item.

You need to give
1. Year, Make and Model of car.
2. Size of Engine and any additions (SuperCharged/Turbo Charged)
3. What failed.

Your question is like me walking into the doctors office and saying to the doctor I don't feel right.

Doctor's not going to be able to do anything for me if that's all I tell him.

Car/truck??? Make/model?? Some help here!! Too old to have cat convertors on it?? O2 sensor bad??--why not just tell us what kind of vehicle it is??
