As a lender myself I can tell you that if you don't meet a certain profile you can forget a SBA loan, I really hate to say so but I have excellent credit and a solid business plan but they still turned me away. I now have a very successful Business Loan, Credit Card Processing, and Equipment Leasing Business of which I had to get the initial financing from Prosper.Com to get the first wave of printed materials and advertising funds. Now that the ball is rolling and has been for 3 years, thanks to Jian software I created the solid business plan which has guided my path!

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
