Solve the y-variable: 5y + 1.8 = 4y - 3.2

First: combine "like" terms on one side (left)---combine the coefficients with the y-variable > subtract "4y" from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign)....

5y - 4y + 1.8 = 4y - 4y - 3.2

5y - 4y + 1.8 = - 3.2

y + 1.8 = - 3.2

Sec: subtract "1.8" from both sides to isolate "y" on one side...

y + 1.8 - 1.8 = - 3.2 - 1.8

y = - 3.2 - 1.8

y = - 5
