Sounds like you have a trojan virus. They cause pop-ups to open browser windows and they install a program telling you that you have a virus!!! I had a very annoying one that the guys on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com helped me to get rid of. Do a virus scan, run spybot search and destroy, Lavasoft AdAware... they will tell you if you have been infected. If you are you will need to download "Hijack This" and then post the log onto http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/. They will walk you through the pretty easy process. All the above programs are FREE!

Spyware programs did nothing to permanently remove the trojan for me. I had the vundo trojan. It kept self-replicating after I had used every known spyware and antivirus program. HiJack this and killbox work great!

(1) Get you self a good antivirus or a free one .
(2) If you have not already scanned your comp with spybot do that now .Update it and then run it so it gets rid of all the spyware and trojans
(3a) Do an online virus scan to check if you still have any other viruses in your computer. And let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware .

Ditto the answer(s) about checking for spyware, especially if the popups are happening *outside* of the time you're using the browser. If you're using the browser, you can also:

(1) Internet Explorer: Tools...Internet Options...General...Tabs... choose a setting for how Internet Explorer handles popups

(2) Firefox: Tools...Options...Content. ..Block popups

Check your pop-up blocker is enabled, then if you're still having problems, follow the advice given from the other players.
