Let me think, BRB.
"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is good but picked too much.
"Those Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula LeGuin
"The Rockinghorse Winner" by DH Lawerence
"The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins
"A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner
"The Guest" by Albert Camus

I read a couple of these in HS, most in college. They are all very thought provoking stories.

Just got the author's names from Wikipedia & their summaries look good if you want an idea of what the story is about.

Here's a nice page with many classical short stories:

Of these, I'd recommend Roald Dahl, Ambrose Bierce, Kipling, O'Henry, Saki, and of course EA Poe. But that's absolutely personal.
If you have the time (maybe after your report) check the other stories, many of them are excellent.

Good luck!

How about something by Arthur Conan Doyle - many of the Sherlock Holmes short stories are available on line.

I think one really good and frightening tale you can read is
"The most dangerous game" You can find it at http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/danger.html. Take into account that this tale by Richard Connel was translated into a movie by King Kong creator Ernest B. Schoedsack and Irving Pichel dated at 1932. A really frightening movie and very daring for the era because of the horrible story it suggest and the ambience created very very haunting.

"The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry
"The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe
"The Ransom of Red Chief" by Bret Harte
"The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

All of these are available at www.gutenberg.net for free.
