I was fitted with Mirena IUD when it first came on the market. I must have been an exceptional case, because my experience with it was HORRIBLE.

The insertion was so painful I cried. The cramping and post insertion bleeding terrified me, and I nearly bled to death in childbirth!

The next five months were pure, unadulterated HELL. I had more bleed days than not, I became anemic, I was constantly cramping, sex was unbearable.

Finally I went to the hospital because I KNEW something wasn't right. Boy was I ever right...Not only did I have PID, but the IUD had punctured my uterus so severely I had to have it surgically removed. To this day, I have scar tissue that is so bad it can be clearly seen on ultrasounds, and is completely blocking my right fallopian tube.

I would rather be taken out and shot than be told I needed another IUD!

Moral of the story: any immediate pain or questionable discharge you're having should be discussed with your doctor, because you never know!

I had a hysteroscopy, biopsy and the Mirena fitted on Friday 2 February 2007. I have been in bloody agony since the Sunday after. I've been to my GP - she gave me painkillers. Went to the local out-of-hours clinic - said I had an infection, gave me two course of antibiotics. Spent the whole of this afternoon in the local A&E department, unable to walk from the pain. They finally realised that I've got internal bruising from having the procedures done.

If it's ongoing, give NHS Direct a call on 0845 46 47. If it's worsening, go down to A&E. Nurofen Plus are pretty good at killing the pain.

Good luck. xxxx

I have read of several such cases where pain, bleeding etc. was reported after a copper T and similar IUDs were fitted. Better you get it removed quickly (the body is trying to expel that foreign object and is trying to set up irritation and inflammation locally).

I did - several years ago now. I had a uterine infection as a result of the iud - from what I remember it happened very soon after having it fitted. I had to have mine removed and a course of antibiotics. I did try having another one fitted but unfortunately the same thing happened - it just wasn't suitable for me. If I were you I'd go and see my GP asap. Good luck

bypass on your docs in the present day and that they'll manage a test to work out if the IUD continues to be in place. regrettably whether it continues to be in place, removing could have some detrimental aspects, which would be defined, however the quicker it rather is carried out the extra effective. good luck x
