The man who theorizes that it was hidden in a wall, Maurizio Seracini , has just been given permission to search again, although he must not damage any part of the wall.

The Feb 12, 2007 issue of Time Magazine also has an article on this.

There's a man that has been searching over a decade and he is almost positive he has found it. If he is right, it is exactly where it was left, just someone put a wall in front of it and painted another painting. He has proof that the owner had done this a few other times (placing a wall in front and painting over art). He has permission to search, but he must not disturb the present painting, which is also very old. He thinks it will take him several months to go through the process required to do this, but he has recently begun.

Read an article just a couple days ago that stated he is still working on getting permission to search for it. There are concerns about the painting in front of the recess being damaged.

So he has not found it yet....

The only war scene I know of is the plaster mural he painted in Florance in either 1503 or 1504, and that as destroyed by mold and poor casting a few years later. But it would certainly be exciting if they discovered more of his or any of the other great artists works.
