Trotsky would have been a much better leader, but he lacked the cold-blooded ruthlessness of Stalin. The previous answers are correct ... Stalin was uneducated compared to Trotsky. Trotsky was cultured, educated, and diplomatic; everything Stalin wasn't.

Good question. First, Trotsky was closer to the Soviet Union's first leader Lenin. Stalin propagated total lies about this, when he outmaneuvered Trotsky, and followed Lenin. Second, Stalin was a master schemer and promoter of himself. In short, Stalin was a master of manipulating the bureaurcracy of the Soviet Union. Trotsky was more of an idealist, a sincere believer in Marxism. Third, Stalin was a crude Georgian; Trotsky was a more cultured , better read, and better educated Russian.
