The time it takes to process the paperworkis way longer than your stay at the hospital. The certifiacte I received in the mail was a hospital birth certificate not an official certificate, but they do send in all of the info to the town so that within a month or so an official certificate with a seal will be able for you to pick up or have mailed. My hospital sent in the birth certificate info and social security info. I though that I had to get a birth certificate and go to the ss office, but after about three weeks her ss card arrived in the mail.

Well it actually depends on the state that you live in. Like here in Missouri you have to wait 6 to 8 weeks before you can go to the vital statistics office or to the local health department to request it and you have to pay 15 dollars now to get a birth certificate. They can give it to you right then or it can be mailed to you. It is not free, the only thing here that they mail you after you have a child is the social security card. Hopes this helps a little.

The actual legal birth certificate is mailed to you at home. The certificate that you getr from the hospital is mostly just decorative. I'm not positive, but I think that now you have to request and pay for a copy of your child's birth certificate before it is sent to you.

You DO fill out the information for your child while in the hospital and the hospital and doctor at the birth will fill out and sign that paperwork.

The hospital gave us a "birth certificate" but this is not the official one. You have to request a copy from your state. I live in Texas so I got my son's through the Texas Department of State Health Services. Do a web search for "request birth certificate" with your area included and you should find some information. Or ask your pediatrician or your local court house. I was able to get a full sized copy and a copy for my wallet.

I live in MN. When I had my son, they have a hospital rep come and get all the information for the birth certificate and the social security card. My husband and I reviewed it at the hospital and signed everything. A short while later, it showed up in the mail.

I was given the baby book copy at the hospital, but the official birth certificates have to be obtained at your local health office for a fee.

the actual certificate is mailed to you. You have to order it. they give you the order form at the hospital. You have to PAY for it. The hospital will give you a "Hospital certificate" for free though. You can not use this for any documents though. Like....passport, little league...school...etc. But it's cute in the baby book!

The hospital should give you an application to register your child in your city, once that is complete then just apply online for your birth certificate

The birth record is given to you in the hospital, The Vital Statistic representative will visit you in the hospital and get your information for the birth certificate and you have to get it yourself. (In Virginia)
