I think you mean Palmetto(American Cockroach). Big reddish brown buggers. The name comes from their fondness for palm trees as a nesting site.
As for getting in your house, they get in through cracks and pipe openings, and sometimes open doors. In warm climates they are content to live outside, but when it gets cold they want to stay warm too. They also like to lay there eggs indoors. You can also carry them in in firewood.
Make sure all your doors and windows seal tightly. Use expandable foam or caulk to seal any gaps around pipes. Make sure your attic vents are screened off from the inside. Caulk any cracks in the outside of your house. These things will help keep the critters out and have the added benefit of saving you money on your utility bills by keeping your heat or AC in.

Palmetto's are very good at finding ways into the home. Any small crack or hole they find they can get in. There is no fool proof way of keeping them out. You can ensure that any and all cracks, holes and other openings are sealed tight with caulk for example. Keeping outside surrounding areas clean of food sources and moist damp dark places where they like to nest will also help. If allowed in your area, you can also put down an insecticide on the yard such as diazanon. Inside the homes can be fog bombed for small infestations, larger infestations will require the house be tented.

The answer to your first question, I'm sure you know, is that they walk.
There are plenty of tiny openings in your house. Exterior doors that open and close. Dryer vents. A/C vents. Holes in the foundation.
Plenty of places for bugs to get in.
Keeping them out is hard. Obviously, closing up any possible hole is a start. Investigate alternative ways of venting your dryer. Seal up the foundation. Caulk windows and doorways.

you could be bringing them in from other places. dont use paper bags from the grocery store, they love those. be careful when you bring in boxes. if you visit somewhere that has them, dont take your purse in, they could get in your purse and come out when you get home and well as in your coat and other clothing that is laying around someone that is infested. aside from that some areas are prone to those bugs....seal all cracks in your home the best you can, if your neighbor has them, chances are you will too and get roach bombs and set them off every month or call an exterminator.
