I am an Australian who works part of the year bringing small groups to Egypt for a definitive look at Pharonic Egypt.
It is not part of the usual tours I am involved in, but I recommend a Nile cruise especially for a first time visitor to Egypt.
I have personally enjoyed the experience,it was great!
It is a luxurious way to see the area from Luxor to Aswan.
If you book it as part of your tour of Egypt from home you can be assured you will get a quality boat, with great facilities and service.
The cruisers are modern and clean, it is usually share cabin accommodation but you can book for a single.
Seldom does the tourist trade have any complaints about them.
If you are a more independent tourist. Do your research well!
There are some good tour companies in Egypt, and there are some real shockers!
A good investment for the lone traveller is Lonely Planets Guide to Egypt. It is invaluable and its information updated every 2 years. Last edition was 2006.
The government is currently looking at reviewing the business requirements and training required to offer tours and conduct tours.
This can only be a positive step for Egypt's tourist industry.
I would suggest you use a reputable tour group rather than pick one up on the Luxor Corniche.
The area along the Nile has the highest density of historical sites in Egypt. As well it has some of the most spectacular scenery.
It is great to lay back by the pool and gaze at the stars after a hard day experiencing Pharonic Egypt.
The itineraries only visit slightly and range from 2-5 nights.
By night a variety of entertainment is offered such as a traditional cross between martial arts and dancing preformed by males and the belly dancers always show their style.
A snake charmer will come on board and terrify the crowd with his "pets". Usually the cruise concludes with a memorable Pharonic themed party.
It is loads of fun for all ages and types.

i have been to Egypt many times and been on the normal week cruise down the Nile twice. I loved it but then i love Egypt. The good thing about a cruise rather than staying in the hotel in luxor is you get to see more.... obviously as you travel to Aswan
( although there is a great deal to see in luxor and the average visitor only sees a small amount of what there is to see.)
it is very tiring in that you are always on the go, but the best thing in the world is sailing down the Nile however you do it, the views are fabulous and you will remember them for many years. The service on board is usually good, but the food is boring,( though you can always eat out in luxor or Aswan) drinks fairly reasonable. alot depends on the company on board of course. there are trips out every day and most are included. The trip to abu simble is expensive but well worth it. Do not take the coach it is a 4 hour journey in very uncomfortable situation and 4 hours back. if you like history then go for it. Oh and take the best boat you can afford.

It's a dream tour and the best way to see monuments in small villages and towns between Luxor and Aswan. At the same time you enjoy the Nile beauty while you relax.
I recommend you 7 days cruise starting from Luxor including all visits. 4 stars (deluxe) or 5 stars will be suitable unless you can afford more.
You better take everything for photos and videos with you if you don't want to miss anything.

Head down to Aswan then many ship captains will ask you to join their fellucca tours. There are more commercial ships but pending on how adventurous you are the fellucca was my choice. A fellucca is a small sail boat with a curved mast. Ask other travellers on your way down if they did a cruise. Some fellucca captains are dodgy, be warned! But once you get onto a reputable one it's amazing! I went from Aswan to Luxor, 3 days. Many ups and downs on my trip but I don't want to scare you. Other people I talked to went on very casual trips. It was '96 when I went but if you are approached by a capt. Kamal, move on!

Don't go May-October, and make sure the boat ride isn't to a dock 1 mile up stream where you get a dusty bus ride to Luxor. I hope you like feta cheese and vegetables.
