Everywhere in Orlando is hot that time of year. Thank goodness buildings are nice and cool from air conditioning. Pack clothes that say they wick away moisture from the skin. The golden rule of clothing is "if its cotten, its rotten." Cotten sucks in water, but doesn't release it - so you'll be miserable all day.
Wal Mart, Target, and even the Disney pakrs sell the hats with cooling action crystals in them. They are activated by dipping the entire hat (is a baseball style with mesh linig) in water and then it stays cool for about 8-10 hours! They also sell neck ones as well since that is the area that, once cooled, instantly cools down the rest of the body.
Yes, drinking TONS of water is important because you are sweating all the time.
Take advantage of water parks, play at the parks in the early morning hours, but take a break at your hotel in the afternoon (when the heat is at its worst) and then return in the early evening to the parks once it has cooled down some.

Well, I've been to Walt Disney World twice in August, the past two summers, and the only thing I've had to do to keep cool is wear shorts and a tank top. All of Walt Disney World is air-conditioned pretty much, and even outdoors there are fans to keep you cool while waiting in line. Honestly, it's not bad at all. I live where snow remains at least half the year (if not longer), too. New Hampshire's temperature and weather is nothing like Florida's, but it wasn't hard to adjust at all. In fact, we found it to be absolutely FREEZING in most air-conditioned areas including our Guest Room and were relieved whenever we'd step out into the hot sun. The only thing you can really do to beat the heat is to dress appropriately and stay indoors as much as possible, I suppose.
To keep it simple, the places that are "not so hot" are indoors - the shops, restaurants, indoor attractions, etc.
Also, all of the Walt Disney World theme parks sell spray bottles with fans. The kids love them. Fill up the bottle with some cool water, and then the they can just spray themselves with a nice cool mist. They can use the fan while they spray or just use the fan regularly to circulate the air around them.
Hope I could help!
* Don't take all of TLC's advise. She said, "Go hang out by the pool (how will they know you don't belong?)" Well, I'll answer her question. They will know you don't belong because they check Resort IDs. This has become a big problem, people who ren't Guests of the Resorts using the pools. It is not allowed because it's obviously unfair to the paying Guests when they can't use the pool because the capacity is full thanks to non-Guests. Within the past year they're been cracking down and checking IDs when people arrive at the pools. There's a chance you could get by them, but if they ask for your Resort ID and you don't have, you're out of there. I wouldn't risk it. Plus, you don't want to teach your child to be dishonest. It really isn't fair to the Resort Guests. Then she said, "Maybe take a nap under a palm tree, let the kiddies (if you have them) run around." Sleep while you let the kiddies run around? Sorry, but I those aren't the best parenting skills.

Tips I use:
-Bring a spray bottle to spritz water on your face or body throughout the day. (Target sells a spray bottle for like $3, if you get the Disney one they sell there, it is over $10)
-Small personalized fans! Again, cheaper at Target or Walmart, but you can buy them at Disney as well.
-STORES, always take time to browse because they are always air conditioned. Also, in Epcot (they were re-doing it when I was there) they have a attraction called "Ice Station Cool sponsored by Coca Cola", its like an igloo you go through and at the end you can sample coke from around the world. Its a nice break yet still an attraction.
-Look for lines that wait inside or under a canopy (most rides do have this).
-Shows like "Mickey's Philar Magic" (spelling may be wrong), "Honey I shrunk the audience", "Muppets 3d" and others all have ac as well-so check out those through the day.
-Like you said, wear a hat, as well as shorts- I dont get why people wear pants in the summer, but ive seen it! and drink water or a sports drink so you dont get dehydrated.
If you do get over heated, take a break and go back to the pool at the hotel and don't forget to check out the water parks!
Good Luck and Have Fun!

As hot as it gets here in August- air conditioning is EVERYWHERE! So when it becomes unbearable jusy duck into any building for a few minutes and drink LOTS of water. And the first poster is absolutly correct- after the parks in the morning- spend the hot afternoon at the hotel pool- then head back out to the parks- that is great advice!

Personal fans and water bottles are great but i know of a product called Misty Mates. It is a small personal mister that works great at cooling you off. On qvc.com they have a set that includes 2 of those and 4 of those things that you soak in water and then tie around your neck, for only 20 bucks. They work really well and i will not go to disney world in august again without them.

During the hottest part of the day, either plan lunch, shopping, or a show to escape the heat. Most of the lines now have ac and/or shelters w/ fans to help you cool down. Also, Disney is pretty good about having shade. Some parks have none.

Well, if you're doing Disney... do like the natives do... start early! Get in the park right when they open. Around 1:00pm when it really starts to heat up, get your hand stamped and go visit one of the hotels for lunch. Relax in the air-conditioning! Go hang out by the pool (how will they know you don't belong?) Maybe take a nap under a palm tree, let the kiddies (if you have them) run around.. or if you're staying on property, see if you can get them to take a nap.
Then after 5:00pm (or later) go back. Lots and lots of people are leaving (because they've fried in the heat and the kids are cranky and tired)... you will be refreshed and can hang out until the second the park closes.
Enjoy!

You know what we always do????? In the summer the parks are open longer..
Go to the park early in the morning.. and in the afternoon heat.. go back to your hotel for some pool time.. or a siesta..... and then head back in the late afternoon when the sun goes down...
Otherwise, you'll have to head inside the longer rides and shows to stay out of the direct sun...
Have fun!

We take battery powered fans along. They help. And the hats and water. Universal is not as hot as Disney.
