I play Scrabble online everyday at Scrabulous - http://www.scrabulous.com - and recently found out that at the end of the game:

The total point value of letters in my rack is deducted from my score and added to my opponent's final score. Is this rule correct? If not what should it be?

Also, what happens if I run out of time and we both have tiles left in our racks? I would like to know what points are added / subtracted.

The rule that you described is the same rule mentioned in the rule book that comes in the boxed version of the game; however, at official tournaments such as those held by the National Scrabble Association, a different rule is used.

At NSA tournaments, if you clear your rack at the end of the game, your opponent's points left in their rack are simply doubled and added to your score.

This results in the same difference between the two final scores, but it avoids subtracting.

In both the boxed version's rules and the NSA rules, you still subtract your own rack's points from your score if neither player clears their rack at the end.

I have included a link to the NSA rules in my source list as well as a link to the Hasbro rules (boxed version).

Cheers,
Riven

The site is playing by the correct rule. When the game has ended by someone using all of their tiles, they receive the total of all points left on tiles in the opponent's rack. Also, the opponent must subtract their own tile points from their score.
If time is up and no one has used all their tiles, each player just subtracts their own tile points and the highest score wins.

The web site is playing by the proper Scrabble rules. If there are no tiles left in the bag and one person clears his/her rack, the values of the tiles remaining in the individual players is subtracted from each individual but the total is added to the player who made the final play of the game.

When the game ends, when the time is up, each players' score is reduced/subtracted by the sum/total of their remaining letters. Now when a person uses up all their tiles, then the game actually ends this way too, then all of the other players playing, have their letters added to your Score, and if they have any tiles left, they are subtracted from their own score.

The first rule is correct. If you both have tiles in the rack, you just subtract them from your own score.
