my friend was really curious about this, and i wanted to know too.

I mean in the actual story. theres a scene in the story when he looks in the pit and he sees something. well thats what my friend says any way

It was dark, he couldn't really see the pit, but a stone falls down it and he hears water at the bottom, regardless he knew that if he fell in he would have a long agonizing death, seeming to intimate that the fall would be enough to injure him but not kill him and thus he would molder, starve etc if he were to fall into the pit.
