I have had some jobs in my lifetime where i was on the giving end of telling my supervisor off. Back in '97, i was a college student doing work study at my school. One day my manager called a meeting and required all employees to be there. I told my manager that i had a class and would be missing the meeting and she didn't seem to be concerned. So when i walked in after class to go to work, she called me into the office and she lit into me about missing the meeting, and i lit her right back! She was getting on me and i was yelling at her! Finally, she put me on probation that was to last for about 30-90 days, but i never reached that point. One day, i was putting some files away and she came and started talking to me, and i don't know how or why but she wrecked my concentration so bad i ended up putting the files in the wrong place. Consequently, she made some comment about me setting the whole dept. back because of what i did and she called me in, sat me down, and fired me!
Five years after that, i got a job at another school i was attending for my Bachelors' Degree. It was for tutoring my peers in Math. It seemed good to me because i get to interact and tutor my peers in an area where i knew some parts of what i took from other classes, but ironically, hated the subject because it gave me so much heartbreak, hell, grief, and fear (I needed the money, so what!). I tutored them in Elementary/Basic Algebra. This was in the Fall of 2002.
The person i worked under had an open door policy for the people who worked under him as well as the other students who really needed his help in Math (and there were a lot of them!). Anybody who wanted to see him or the tutors could just walk in and have a seat and wait to be tutored. He was real cool, easy to get along with, and he helped me help the people i was tutoring! But after 2002, things changed in the new year. I walked in to work just days after the new year and was told that my supervisor had left his position to take some classes for a Masters' Program so he could move on up. I found out later on that it was half a lie. He did leave, but it wasn't on the terms he wanted to leave on. He was fired because the higher-ups at my school didn't like his style of doing things, his "open door policy." Not having him there really hurt the rest of the department.
First, we ended up getting a temporary supervisor from another department to fill in until a replacement was found. She picked on me one day because i chose to wear my coat in the building. It was cold as hell where i worked! If the heat would've been on in the dead of winter, this would not have been a problem! Finally, we ended up hiring someone, but she was a ***** of a supervisor to work with because she didn't care about the employees the way my last one did. One thing she did that pissed me off was change the tutoring schedules from walk-ins to appointments only! The result? All the tutors who wanna get paid have to have some scheduled appointments with students and if you don't have any scheduled appointments, you don't get paid. With walk-ins, you got paid whether they showed up or not. Clock in, get your 20 hours for the week, and jet!
When i brought it to my new supervisor that appointments only were just plain stupid and i really needed my $, she said that she would try and accommodate me as best she could, but would still stick with appointments only. She lied about accommodating me. I got so frustrated that i went to the Dean of Students and had a nice, friendly talk about the situation. The Dean told me that she would do what she could and talk to her about it.
I got a call from the Dean and was told that i had been FIRED! For what, i wondered? So i made an appointment to talk to my boss's boss, who was the supervisor who filled in until a replacement was found. I walked into the office, sat down, and waited until she called my name. When she did, i walked to the office she was in and my boss walked in right behind me and closed the door. Now, it's these two bitches and me and i'm yelling at them and telling them that i didn't like these changes that were going on! These were changes that not only affected me and my $, but in the coming months they would affect every student in the school and enrollment dropped like Lincoln Logs! After i finished ranting and raving, i walked out, ready to slam the door. But my supervisor grabbed it before i could do it. I looked at her like i wanted to just.....AND WALKED AWAY!
Three years later, i got yet another job. I just graduated from college, was job hunting for six months, and once again, needed the $. Started working there in November 2004 I worked the job for close to two years. What happened here was similar to what happened to me with my tutoring job. I was hired in, had full time status, was making my $, and everything was good. Me and my manager got along well. Then six months later, he stepped down due to health issues, and some of the higher-ups were cracking down on him because they had a problem with his managing style. They wanted him to "micromanage" his people. In other words, you have to hang over their shoulder every minute to see what they're doing. That's a style i'm really not comfortable with.
After he left, some more employees left and we were pretty shorthanded. Another supervisor came in, hired some wrong people, and we ended up losing a lot of business in just a matter of months. One of our biggest clients, who brought in over $1 million to the store in revenue, suddenly stopped dealing with us, due to a mess up by an employee that he hired! Then, he came under fire for HIS management style and stepped down to a 3rd tier role at another store. Despite all of this, i maintained my attendance and a positive attitude and my hours and benefits were never affected. All of that changed when the 3rd manager stepped in.
Once he was hired in, things got tighter. Pretty soon, it was a chokehold! I started getting blamed for things i didn't do and my supervisor took the customers' side over mine! Some would deliberately lie just to get some attention! Once, a customer was waiting and there was a long line ahead of him. He said something about not being able to wait this long and left the store all pissed off. Before he left, he tried to get my attention and i let him know that i'd be with him as soon as i was done with the rest of the people ahead of him. Then, he walked out. My supervisor called me in and said that the customer said that i said this, that, and the other. It was more of a "he said, she said" kind of thing. Because of that, i was written up and placed on six months probation. My hours started getting cut and i was being used less and less. I went on vacation for the holidays in December '05. I called my supervisor to find out when my next workday was and was told that i wouldn't be working at all the next week. This happened for about a month. Finally, i got called in to work, but i found out that my hours, benefits, and everything else were cut down and/or off completely because of that one incident that didn't mean nothing to me!
I lived with this **** for some more months, had dispute after dispute with my supervisor and two assistant supervisors over different issues. Then, one day it all ended. Another new member to the team who was brought in as a replacement told my supervisor that i had did something i had no business doing when all i was doing was trying to help the customer to pack a large box. Some more things were said and i got called in to speak to my manager and HIS manager. I went off on the both of them, spoke my piece of it, signed some papers, and got out!
It was one of the worst jobs i ever had in my life!
