Well to answer your question, obviously some here do. But I say.......
NO WAY
And I'm not sure whether you mean all-time or one season, no matter, it's still NO WAY.
Let's look at some facts. Gretzky is the only one who ever got 200 points in a season and he did it FOUR TIMES. Mario Lemieux, one of the greatest players ever as well who played in the same era, never did it. Other players in his day and time who are or will go to the Hall of Fame...Messier, Lafleur, Bossy, Dionne.... never even got close to doing something like that. Gretzky was ROUTINELY 50 points or more ahead of the second place scorer.......who was often on the oilers too.
Now Crosby is a great player and is going to get better. He'll probably win the scoring title with around 120 points. See how many people have reached that level? Nothing to sneeze at mind you, but quite a few. He'll have to bump that up to about 150 a year AVERAGE for about 10 years. And again, only Lemieux and Gretzky ever reached those numbers for such long stretches.
Ok, but for sake of argument we'll give Crosby 150 a year for 10 years and 100 a year for his last 10 years. Remember he has to play 20 years, keep starring when he's in his late 30's and be injury free. That's a lot to ask. But how many points is that if he does that? 2500.
The great one had 2857.

It's going to be tough, and I don't think it will happen unless the goals start rolling in for Crosby's team as a whole. You need to keep this in mind: Gretzky has more ASSISTS than the #2 player has in POINTS. Gretzky doesn't even need his goals to be the #1 in points, he's that good.
#1 -- Gretzky: 894 G, 1963 A, 2857 P
#2 in points -- Messier: 694 G, 1159 A, 1887 P
#2 in goals -- Howe: 801 G, 1049 A, 1850 P
#2 in assists -- Francis: 549 G, 1249 A, 1798 P
(Only NHL totals are included above. Even when adding in Howe's points in the WHA (508), Gretzky still has Mr. Hockey beat.)
The nearest active player to the top in points is Joe Sakic, with 1549 points.
Crosby has some work ahead of him. It's possible, but production really needs to step up and his team, as a whole, will need to put more pucks in the net than the league has seen since the 80's.

Are you people serious? No he isn't THAT good. But he is good. And to the person that said that it was easier to score goals back in the day....well then why was it that players almost never had more than 100 points in a season back then. Gretzky came out and Dominated the league in scoring unlike ANYBODY ever. C'mon....goalies weren't as good then....thats soooooooo not true....hopefully another hero will emerge soon like Gretzky.....then everyone wont be questioning whether this guy or the other is him. You all will know, as did the world when the Great One appeared.

NO WAY! Do you remember that Gretz scored 215 points in 1985-86? The way the game is played today, that total is imposable to reach. Not only that but, back when Wayne was at the top of his game, free agency and the salary cap were not in effect yet. Players are too big and too fast today. For another thing, teams are reluctant to have a player fight for one guy because of the new rules.

Nope....and thats as good as a guarantee. The game today has changed so much from when Gretzky was playing that its impossible to reach the point totals that the Great One had during his time. Gretzky was also surrounded by unbelievable talent because there was no salary cap at that time. Crosby will have unbelievable seasons, no doubt, but he definitely won't have "Great Ones".

The only chance Sid the Kid or any other player for that matter has of breaking Gretzky's point totals is if that moron of a commisioner Gary Buttmen actually increases the size of the nets and that better not happen ........so my answer is no the great one won't be beat

This has got to be the absolute dumbest question ever, what are you like a 9 year old kid living in Pittsburgh? Hell NO. Crosby is a talented young player, and by the time it's all said and done, he'll be up there among the all time greats on the record sheets. But he's not even the best player in the league right now. The first thing he needs to do is get on a new team.

I don't think so because the great one played in a more offensive era. While Crosby is very talented you just don't see 8-7 games everynight like wayne had in Edmonton.

sure
every record gets broken eventually
the rules changes have opened up the game and scoring is way up
it might not happen for 20-30 yrs, but if a high scorer has a long career, sure
EDIT: I forgot to say: Crosby or another young guy we may have not seen yet could do it. He has to stay healthy, and have great teammates.
