I have had Dish f-o-r-e-v-e-r! I have an old PVR receiver that only records 30 hours of shows. I'd like to upgrade to a new 100 hour model, but I can't see shelling out another $99.00 to lease another one! If Ebay or something like that is an option...how do I get Dish to turn it on? Any ideas?

Dish no longer just offers free equipment to new customers. If you’re not already under contract – you will find they are more than willing to give you leased equipment. Dish has embraced the cell phone marketing concept of using equipment to retain customers with contracts.

Ebay can be a great place to find receivers. The receiver must have a “smart card”. You will be responsible for any Pay-Per-View balances outstanding on the “smart card” prior to activating the receiver. Without a smart card Dish charges approximately $200 to activate the receiver and provide the card. The seller’s positive rating will be critical. You trust the seller to provide a functioning PVR without an outstanding balance. When you receive the PVR from an Ebay seller – simply call Dish to activate it. Not difficult.

I highly recommend the Dish extended warranty with any PVR. For just a couple of dollars a month Dish will replace your receiver WHEN the hard drive goes bad. Definitely a good idea for a PVR purchased on Ebay.

Good Luck.

Ha Good luck with that! We were Dish customers for years, and when we wanted to upgrade they wanted us to pay as well... they said free upgrades were only for new customers! We switched to Direct TV and got the new system for free.
However.... If you were to get one from ebay as long as you have the card from your existing receiver and it fits the new reciever I THINK that's all you need .... but I wouldn't stake my life on it.
