Evolution of technology. We couldn't reach the moon until airflight was developed.

Probably the answer is "Planned obsolescence"
If you make something too well, then the possibilities of selling more units as time goes by lessens.
Make it badly, then Gradually get better, and then find a way to make more cash as the Cash Cow gets Better, Healthier, stronger
