£40 can go a long way, as long as you're not paying for all your friends, too! How about doing one serious-but-fun event, like going on a guided tour of a castle, or Botanical gardens etc, and something more frivolous, like catching a film, later on?
Try to avoid eating out, as buying ingredients in a supermarket and having a meal at home with friends is much cheaper and just as fun.

not sure if you have a greyhound track near you but i love going and they generally do dinner packages from about £10 a head, hope this helps!
