Of course not. If you made drills all you did in school, there'd be no time to teach anything.

And the person who said teachers are just passing supervision off on parents doesn't know what they're talking about. We've got so many problem kids today because parents are passing all teaching responsibility to the schools. These are the parents of children! Who should have the most incentive to supervise the kids? Teachers have 30+ kids to look after. How many does a parent have?

No, I don't. Homework is the best way for teachers to assess how much their students are absorbing. It re enforces what's being done in class. It's also good preparation for written exams.
I think that homework & course work should count for some of the marks awarded at exams. Education should be a three-way co-operation between teachers, students & parents.

i think for primary school children yes.. i am often sat with a 10 and 8 year old for up to 1 1/2 - 2 hrs a night... at their age i think its excessive. once your a high school im afraid youve got to do it, however i dont believe parents should be teaching the national curiculum to their kids, parental supervision should be all thats needed, after all we might have less than 30 kids at home, but we are not qualified teachers and juggling several kids homework of different ages and abilities is tough at times... teachers should stop passing the buck to parents to make up the shortfll in our education system.

It is an evasion of responsibility for teachers to pass this burden on to the supervision of parents. Learning should be achieved through drills in the classroom. Imagine a basketball coach demonstrating a layup, then lazily telling his players, "Now go home and practice it. I hope your parents care enough about your basketball skills to make sure you stick with it at home.
