There's no answer to this. There are some common themes, but anyone can have a different take on this.
I personally view happiness and contentment as success. Having money is good too, but if success is like that food triangle thingy, it's about in the middle. Happiness is at the top.

They are where they want to be in life. They are doing what they love and they dont care how much money they are making to do what they love. I would say a teacher is more successful then a professional athlete...the reason I say this is most teachers are doing what they love, they complain about the salary but do it anyway. Professional athletes feel like they deserve more money for what they do and will go on strike to prove it. Money doesn't prove success.
