This is something my family was discussing and the thought of a vet comming and shooting my horses to put it to sleep is just horrifighing. Please help.

Thanks for the answears. The discussion was brought up when tlaking about when one of our horses died. Some one brought up how terrible it would be to put one down and then some thought they used guns and i just wanted to get a clear answear from people that know. To me, ussing a gun would de disrespectful to the owner and horse... not to mention inhumain.

Also, my horses did not need to be put down I was just thinking of what would happen if such a thing needed to be done.

I had one of my horses put to sleep as well. As said above she was given a sedative and then was given strychnine. Vets don't set out to shoot your horse but are required at least in my state and I truly believe in the others as well to carry a gun capable of killing the horse. They are required to do this because there is the rare horse who will have an unexpected reaction to the drugs and at that point are a danger. In that case the vet will have to shoot the horse. We had a farm and the vet and us walked the orse up back in the meadow where she would be buried and this is what she told me when I asked why she was carrying a revolver.

Generally most of the time an injection of euthanasia solution is used. In some rare instances a vet may use a gun due to enviromental factors. There is a risk of a horse being euthanized, and not buried or somehow disposed of, and wild animals feeding off of the dead horse, thus there is a risk of secondary poisning to the wild animal that eat dead euthanized animals. I know that there is an Equne Vet in Colorado that has to euthanize horses with a gun for this reason.

Horses are put to sleep just like small animals. There is an injection given to basically overdose them with anesthesia. They will fall asleep first, and then their hearts will stop. If that method does not work, most vets still have other methods available to them. The vet I work with still carries a gun (though he has only had to use it once) and they are taught the most humane places to inflict gunshot wounds so as to minimize pain and euthanize as humanely as possible. Again, this is the last resort, and I have been on euthanasias (my own horse included) where more than one injection was given, so as mentioned, gunshot is the LAST LAST LAST resort for any trained professional.

The vet with administer a sedative first. Then once the horse begins to get sleepy, they will give him the actually euthanasia shot. The horse will fall slowly with the help of everyone. Sometimes the horse is already on the ground from the sedative. The very will NOT shoot your horse.

First, what a sad depressing discussion! :-(
They don't shoot them anymore...(I'm not sure that vets ever did, mostly "cowboys" did that.
They use an injectable like dogs and cats..it cost a little more of course, because of the animal size, but they just go to sleep and it's much more humane.
Now, tell you family to talk about something pleasant please!!

the vet will inject the horse with some medicine that will cause the horse to go to sleep and it will feel NO PAIN.

The vet will inject it with a serum. It will be very humane.

Sorry about your loss.

They anesthetize the animal, and keep putting it deeper into anesthesia until its body functions stop. The animal feels absolutely no pain. It is extremely humane. Don't pay any attention to those gross scenes in old western movies.
