Is it really true that if you put sugar in a gas tank it ruins the engine? What does it do to the engine?

Actually it's NOT true.

Sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline, but remains granular. The "damage" that it does is that it can clog the fuel filter. If the granules are able to slip past the filter they can plug up a fuel injector (or two).

Sugar doesnot disolve in gasoline so what it does is clog the fuel system.Purging the fuel system of all sugar should restore the car to running condition. This can be expensive-$300 and up. The $20 or so investment into a locking gas cap may stop this kind of vandalism.

Depends how much sugar you put in. If its just a few tablespoons- or even a cup- in a full gas tank, it'd just disolve into the 12 or so gallons of fuel.

Then, because sugar is similar to gasoline chemically, it'd just be burned out.

It used to be that the sugar clogs up the carburetor but now it plugs up the fuel injectors.

It runs through the gas line, and really does a nasty little number on everything it comes in contact with, especially (as another answerer stated) it screws up the cylinders.

This has been tried many times and nothing happens. At best, you will clog up the pick-up filter or the fuel filter.
